Choosing the right house plant is an important decision. Too often we buy plants based on their appearance without considering if the room the plant we live in is actually right for it. In this way not only we're risking that the plant won't thrive in it but we're also wasting money.
Here are some key elements you should consider before buying a plant for your home:
- light: Many plants require bright light but they won't thrive in direct sunlight. Many popular plants such as cacti, monstera, ficusand peace lilly will grow healthy in south, west or east facing rooms but if your room is north facing, you might need to consider other plants such as sanseveria.
- temperature: In the spring and summer room temperatures in our homes are great for most of the plants. However pay attention to maintaining at least 18 degrees Celsius during winter to avoid problems with your tropical plants
- pets: Not all plants are pet-friendly. Ficuses, monsteras and other common house plants can be toxic for your furry friends
